When it comes to dealing with acne and one’s skin, one of the most important things that you need to do to keep your skin as clean, clear, and blemish-free as possible is to maintain a good cleansing routine. Many different things can cause acne, but sometimes, you can help prevent acne by simply having a good cleansing routine and by using products that suit your skin daily. How do you know what the best cleansing routine is and why is a good cleansing routine so important?
Why Cleansing Is Important
Cleansing is important because acne is generally caused by bacteria and microbes that you encounter in your environment. Those germs are on surfaces and things you touch. You transfer these germs to your skin when you touch your face. Then, these microbes burrow into your skin and cause all kinds of health problems, including acne, rashes, and discoloration. This bacteria will continue to grow and reproduce in your skin, which will worsen your acne over time, cause more frequent breakout, cause boils to appear on your face, and can even lead to more serious skin conditions like rosacea.

“Common skin infections include cellulitis, erysipelas, impetigo, folliculitis, and furuncles and carbuncles. Cellulitis is an infection of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue that has poorly demarcated borders and is usually caused by Streptococcus or Staphylococcus species. Erysipelas is a superficial form of cellulitis with sharply demarcated borders and is caused almost exclusively by Streptococcus. Impetigo is also caused by Streptococcus or Staphylococcus and can lead to lifting of the stratum corneum resulting in the commonly seen bullous effect…When the infection is bacterial rather than mechanical in nature, it is most commonly caused by Staphylococcus” (Stulberg DL, Penrod MA, Blatny RA. Common bacterial skin infections. Am Fam Physician. 2002 Jul 1;66(1):119-24. PMID: 12126026).
Some microbes/bacteria that cause acne are:
“Propionibacterium acnes is a tiny microbe that lives in the oily region of the skin’s pores. The bacteria can aggravate an immune response which causes red, swollen bumps to develop on the skin (acne). The researchers collected samples of P. acnes from the noses of 49 pimply people and 52 people with clear skin” (Nordqvist, J. (2013, Feb 28). Strain Of Acne-Causing Bacteria Found To Actually Preserve Skin. MedicalNewsToday).
Looking at propionibacterium and Demodex mites, it is clear that you may not always see obvious symptoms of the bacteria that can cause acne and skin conditions right away or for quite some time after an exposure. These microbes are still very concerning though because they can live beneath the surface of your skin and cause many skin problems over time, such as the development of rosacea, wrinkles, rashes, pits in the face, or pimples hidden beneath the skin. So, you must take care to cleanse your skin thoroughly each day, even if you do not see pimples or impurities on your skin right now.
How To Cleanse Your Skin For A Clearer, Healthier, More Blemish-Free Complexion
If you follow Korean beauty trends, you have likely heard of the double cleansing method. I personally really like the double cleansing method. This is something that women who wear makeup will find to be very beneficial. If you have never tried the double cleansing method, then I highly recommend it.
If you are unfamiliar with the double cleansing method, it is a routine where you wash your face twice. Once with oil or an oil-based cleanser, and then follow up with a traditional cleanser, such as a foam cleanser.
The oil will help remove all of your makeup in a way that traditional cleansers will not, while also moisturizing your skin and preparing it for a harsher cleanser. Oil is really great for those who wear makeup and who have dry skin. You can choose to apply the oil first to help remove all of your makeup and then cleanse your whole face with a foam cleaner, or you can cleanse your skin first with a foam cleanser and then follow up with oil to remove the last traces of your makeup and to leave some of the oil on your skin to moisture your skin over night.
You can use any oil of your choice to cleanse your face, with the exception of soy/vegetable oil. There are a lot of negative health effects associated with soy, so I strongly recommend against using it. Other oils though like olive oil or coconut oil will work just fine.
⚠ A word of caution: I do not recommend using oil alone to cleanse your face. Oil is nowhere near strong enough to prevent acne, so you may find yourself going backwards with more acne than you started with over time if you only use oil to cleanse your skin; not to mention you will also end up with clogged pores from the buildup caused by thick oils like castor oil and olive oil.
A traditional soapy cleanser along with a good astringent are what helps keep germs and bacteria in your skin at bay. These two products together help prevent acne, rashes, and other skin conditions from occurring and getting out of control. It is important to consider the ingredients in your cleanser, however. I use natural or organic cleansers on my skin because I have very sensitive skin. I often have a bad reaction to the chemicals in face cleansers and bath soaps.
A good cleanser should be strong, effective, and safe for your skin; these factors are also what makes a cleanser a good astringent. A good cleanser should have strong antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. When you use a good cleanser daily, it will help reduce and prevent how much bacteria grows and colonizes your skin. Thus, using a good cleanser helps reduce acne, rashes, and some bacteria from spreading in your skin over time.
Here is a cleanser that I recommend. You can find this cleanser here on this website. This is a natural and organic cleanser made with essential oils and antiparasitic ingredients:
One thing that is very important to understand is that water alone is not enough to cleanse the skin. I know many people and cultures that bathe with just water and consider water clean and pure. However, water has become polluted due to industrialization, so there are many harmful chemicals in water today. We also have contaminated water with things like feces and trash. So, make sure that you are mixing clean water with your cleanser. Unclean water will just add to the bacteria that is already on your face. Your cleanser will have a harder time getting rid of heavy doses of bacteria at once, so using clean water is healthier for you and more effective for your skincare goals long-term.
Lastly, it is important that you moisturize your skin after cleansing it. The reason for this is because a strong cleanser may dry out your skin, so moisturizing it before bed will help bring moisture back into your skin while you sleep. If you are looking for a good moisturizer, then I recommend Barbara Frank’s Rose Beautifying Cream since it is natural, organic, and very effective.
