Oxygen is simply amazing and it sustains human life. Oxygen is as crucial for life, health, and wellness as food, water, blood, and a heart are.
“Oxygen is a gas that your body needs to work properly. Your cells need oxygen to make energy. Your lungs absorb oxygen from the air you breathe. The oxygen enters your blood from your lungs and travels to your organs and body tissues. Certain medical conditions can cause your blood oxygen levels to be too low. Low blood oxygen may make you feel short of breath, tired, or confused. It can also damage your body” ((n.d.) Oxygen Therapy. MedlinePlus.gov).
We can not breathe and live without oxygen. Oxygen is the fuel of fire and every living creature depends upon it for its existence. Trees need oxygen to help them grow and to process their food so that they have energy. Oxygen is in the air, streams, lakes, rivers, and caves. Oxygen is all around us, but not everyone can get enough of it to keep their body working at maximum capacity. Thus, it is crucial that we all know how to get enough oxygen and understand the role that it plays in improving health and sustaining life. Lack of proper amounts of oxygen can lead to sickness and death.

Health Problems Caused By Inadequate Amounts of Oxygen
Low oxygen levels are something that many people experience at different times in their life. Low oxygen occurs when the blood or tissues do not get enough oxygen for the body to function at full capacity. When people have low oxygen levels, this is a condition called “hypoxemia”. The blood carries oxygen throughout the body, which is essential for breathing, cleaning out the body, and overall health and wellness. When oxygen can not reach the tissues in the body, this condition is called “hypoxia”.
The whole body needs oxygen, and without it, your health will be very poor and your body will be unable to fight infection properly. Every major organ and body part will be affected by inadequate amounts of oxygen. Some symptoms caused by low oxygen levels are:
- Scarring and damage to the cornea.
- More bacteria and parasites will accumulate in the body. This is one of the reasons why it is important to exercise. Oxygen helps kill germs and bacteria, so it helps the overall immune system to function better and the body can clean itself out and expell germs more effectively.
- Skin coloring will change and look unhealthy. Instead of that healthy rosy glow in the cheeks, the skin will become bluish and pale in color.
- Pain will occur in the joints and muscles.
- Anemia, hair loss and thinning, breathing difficulties, chest pain, dizziness, and high blood pressure can occur.
- A heart attack or stroke can occur. When someone has difficulties breathing, it is a strain on the heart, so heart pain may occur from that strain, and the heart can even give out.
A symptom of COVID-19 that started to be talked about a few months ago was low oxygen levels. People with COVID-19 may develop a mix of these low oxygen symptoms. Someone in my family tested positive for COVID-19, and they developed temporary blindness. This is likely linked to the low oxygen levels, which can damage the cornea and lead to temporary, or even permanent blindness if it continues for an extended period of time.
“A blood oxygen level below 92% and fast, shallow breathing were associated with significantly elevated death rates in a study of hospitalized COVID-19 patients…Almost all patients with low oxygen levels (99%) and rapid breathing (98%) were given supplemental oxygen and glucocorticoids to quell inflammation…Of the 1,095 patients, 197 (18%) died in the hospital. Relative to those hospitalized with normal blood oxygen saturations, those with low levels were 1.8 to 4.0 times more likely to die in the hospital. Likewise, patients with high respiration rates were 1.9 to 3.2 times more likely to die than those with normal rates” (Beusekom, M. (2021, May 24). Low oxygen levels, shallow breathing tied to COVID death. CIDRAP).
COVID-19 has such a wide variety of symptoms. Someone who tests positive with it may develop a mix of the symptoms mentioned above, or they may develop no symptoms at all and become a carrier. Regardless, when someone develops COVID-19, or gets sick, it is important that they make sure that they get adequate amounts of oxygen. We need oxygen to experience life fully because it helps keep our heart pumping, so even before COVID-19 came along, getting enough oxygen is, and always will be crucial for health and wellness. Your immune system needs oxygen to help keep you healthier and breathing, so here are some natural ways to increase your oxygen intake:
- Take oxygen tablets the way that you would take vitamins. These are essential to take daily, especially during COVID-19.
- Exercise more frequently or regularly. Exercise gets your blood pumping and it helps you breathe in more oxygen and kill more germs and harmful bacteria that make you sick.
- Eat more foods that are rich in oxygen, such as fruits and vegetables. You can get an amazing dose of oxygen daily by freshly squeezing lemon juice and adding it to your favorite juices, or by drinking it alone with water as lemonade.
- Include more alkaline-based foods in your diet. An alkaline-based diet is where you replace acidic foods with alkaline foods, which will give you more oxygen in your diet. Acidic foods can upset the stomach for some people or cause indigestion, but they tend to be heavier, denser, and more filling. Some acidic foods are meats, eggs, fish, bread, and alcohol. Alkaline foods are easier to digest, go down more smoothly, and are higher in oxygen; these include nuts, vegetables, and fruits.
- Live or spend time in an area with greater amounts of oxygen. Getting away from the polluted air in the city and spending time in the countryside can be really relaxing and expose you to cleaner healthier more oxygen-rich air. If you live in the city somewhere near a lot of trees, then you can take more walks on the paths in these areas to get cleaner air.
Conclusion
When it comes to experiencing life and joy, you need a good strong body to get you through it, so you must take good care of your body so that you have a good, healthy, long life. A healthy body will always reward you; it will make you more beautiful naturally, give you healthier stronger children, let you live longer with your loved ones, and help protect you from harmful pathogens that you come across in your environment that can cause you major health problems later, such as cancer and infections.
The best things that you can do to have a healthier body are to clean it out regularly, eat well (what you eat can become medicine for your body), give your body plenty of clean water, exercise regularly (if you do not use it, you lose it), and never let your body get low on oxygen. These things will help you walk through life with a stronger body that you can be proud of!
